In February it was two years since Jordan and I have lived in this house and for those last two years we've been wanting to try and plant a garden but we couldn't decide on a good spot for it and we've both had rather busy schedules. Not a huge garden for a family of 10 or anything. Just something reasonable with a few things to see if either of us had a green thumb.
Growing up both of our families had gardens but slowly those gardens disappeared. We both love fresh fruits and veggies from the garden so this year we made it happen. We planted a garden!
We had an original plan in mind when we started the whole process but that changed several times during the first few phases of this project. All in all we ended up doing the general idea of what we'd planned, and then some. We made it bigger than we originally thought we'd do but I think that'll be a good thing in the long run when we most likely do more planting after we've started a family. Here's our before, during, and after pictures...
The pre-garden phase. Impressive huh? j/k! The prime spot of where we wanted to plant our garden was currently being occupied by a camper. However, to move the camper Jordan and I had to take the toolbox out of the fish and game truck which also included taking out a frame they installed for hauling as well. Basically there were a lot of nuts and bolts to get off. It took a bit longer than we had anticipated but we were sure happy when it was done.
During the planting phase of the garden...noticing a trend of who's doing all the work? j/k Jordan definitely did a ton of work for this garden!
All done!!! Notice the different colored signs I made for each thing we planted? Makes it look pretty legit I think : )
My cousin Richard let us borrow his tiller and Jordan's parents came to help for a few hours later that afternoon. We were certainly grateful for all the help because Jordan was tilling the area, his parents were hauling in wheel barrow's full of horse manure while I was racking out weeds and grass from where we wanted to plant. Once the ground was tilled Jordan, his dad, and myself (okay mostly Jordan and his dad) took some posts Jordan removed from an area up in Birch Creek and cut them down to the size we wanted to frame our garden and each individual planting areas then screw the corners together. We're also grateful the only cost we've had for our garden so far has been the seeds and plants themselves. And a little time and muscle of course : )
We were officially done planting the following Monday when between Jordan's mom and I gathering the plants, I planted some more things. Total we have planted the most of beans (to hopefully can someday), then carrots and peas. We're also seeing if we're successful with some Crook Neck Squash, Zucchini, strawberries, Early Girl and Roma Tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, and watermelon. Yes, watermelon! Jordan's mom told us when she lived in Rexburg years ago she tried to grow some watermelon she could only get them so big but Jordan is so determined to get watermelon. It's actually pretty funny! I think he may just cry if he doesn't get some watermelon out of this garden. I might have to just go buy a couple and stick them in the garden if things go the way I think they will ; )
Now, I already have to admit that from the time I started to write this garden pos (the second week in June) til now I've replaced my two tomatoe plants. I know, I know it's terrible. I'm pretty sure that even though it didn't reach "freezing" temperatures, it was cold enough to kill my tomatoe plants. So, there's my excuse. We'll see if anything else needs replacing. On the bright side...WE HAVE BEANS!!! Our green beans started sprouting just barely above the dirt last Friday or so and now there's a bunch that are showing even more above the dirt. And...we have CUCUMBERS!!! Only a couple cucumbers have sprouted above the dirt but thats okay. Yay! I'm so excited! We're just happy anything is growing in our garden since we really have no idea what we're doing : )
